Treacle Ale
No drink should taste as salty as this does and the hit of cinnamon is overpowering. Also, does not taste "right", not infected or off just unpleasant.Adam wrote:why the plughole?
mine was bottled 17/08 so had about 3 weeks, 1 warm 2 cool. Tried it today and some body has appeared, all the tastes are merging and blending.
i had concerns but i also have supplies for two more batches, will do one with cinamon stick.

I've been convinced by SWMBO to leave it until there's nowt else; maybe it'll mature.
Sticking to TC from now on. Turbo Elder is now conditioning and TC Pineappleapple is fermenting.
hi all,
ive tried this one, didnt know what to do with half a jar of treacle, so i made two gallons... one with ginger powder, one with out. due to people thinking it was too lemony, i added an orange to the mix. i have just racked it, and will be bottling next weekend. not as dark as i expected(to be honest i didnt know what to expect) smeels good to.
two questions tho? does it have a head after its been conditioned in a bottle?
what would it be like mixed with hops?
thanks

ive been looking at this thead and i put some together a few weeks ago, ive tryed a couple of bottles , to be honest, its not that nice, i followed the recipie but it came out too lemony if thats a word and abit sour.
so im going to redo it, but keep the black treacle the same, add more golden syrup, less lemon and add some spray malt to give more strength and body and bit more of an ale taste, just an idea,
so with a stroke of luck it will turn out nice!

I gave this a bash. Made it up to about 8 litres (in 2 DJ's). Used 450g black treacle, 500g golden syrup, 500g demerara sugar (which I added the next day in case it was too much on the first), 2 teaspoons of ground ginger, 2 lemons, and packet of standard Muntons beer yeast. This was on Wednesday July 16th. Following day, when I added demerara, I added some yeast vit nutrient to each DJ. By Tuesday the 29th it was finally ready. Primed the bottles with half a teaspoon of caster sugar per pint. Kept it in the house for a week, then bunged it in to the cooler garage. Friday September 12th thought I'd give a bottle of it a go. Foul, manky horrible. Flat, salty, lemon concoction. I'm going to leave it until Christmas and hopefully by then it may have improved . . .
Mines been bottled for a few weeks now and while it has no bad tastes to it I just think what taste there is is too overpowering. I won't be making it again. It awas also flat when poured into a glass.
Has anyone tried the honey beer recipie from the Harvington website?
Honey Beer
Ingredients:
* 1 lemon
* 1.5lb dark honey
* half an ounce of hops
* 1 teaspoon granulated yeast (a beer one would do - or bread yeast)
* 1 gallon water
Method:
Peel the lemon rind, avoiding the white pith. Squeeze the juice and strain to remove pips.
Dissolve the honey in 2 pints of the water in a bucket.
Put the rest of the water into a large pan with the hops and lemon rind.
Bring to the boil and boil gently for 30 minutes.
Strain the hop water into the honey solution and leave to cool.
Discard the hops and lemon rind.
Add the activated yeast and lemon juice into the cooled mixture, cover over and leave for 3-4 days in a warm place to ferment.
When fermentation has ceased, siphon into sterilised 1 pint beer bottles, leaving an airspace at the top. Add half a level teaspoon sugar to each bottle. Seal with plastic pop-off caps and leave in a warm room to ferment in the bottles for a few days.
Then store for at least 2 weeks in a cool, dark place before drinking.

update time,
bottled my two gallons of treacle ale. got 24 beer bottles out of it. it tasted good, and definitly not salty. like, dare i say, treacly booze... however wont be getting a chance to 'properly' taste as im fighting in a few weeks. but after that, hopefully the primer will have worked, and then we will see.
