Distillation

Post by Laripu » Sat Dec 27, 2008 10:32 pm

Is home distillation illegal in the UK? Has anyone tried it?

It's extremely illegal in the US - if they catch you they impound everything used to make it or transport anything you used to make it, so your house and car become property of the federal gov't. If they think you sold it the bank accounts become their property too.

I'm kind of intrigued by the process, but not enough to risk the consequences. Besides, SWMBO would actually literally chop off my xxx if the feds came and took the house and car! I might be more afraid of her than of them.
Secondary FV: As yet unnamed Weizenbock ~7%
Bulk aging: Soodo: Grocery store grape juice wine experiment.
Drinking: Evan Williams bourbon, Dewar's Scotch (white label), VO Canadian whisky. Various Sam Adams beers.

Its illegal here although you can buy a device that distills "flower essences" for perfumes, oddly enough they sell them in homebrew shops.

A few of the homebrew sites do sell an <ahem> electric "water distiller" alongside a warning that it is illegal to distill alcohol in the UK. Amusingly, one of those sites also describes exactly what you would need to do to get 60% ABV spirit and then plugs their range of flavourings. They are obviously targetting those countries where it is not illegal heheh.

I've also seen a few "working models" of distillers. Obviously only of use for demonstration purposes....

Got it. I'll drop the topic.
