TC, first brew since November

Post by Curious Brew » Sun May 03, 2009 2:55 pm

The three beers I brewed for Christmas lasted me well into March and Sainsbury's two big bottles of Leffe for a fiver kept me going through April, but now I'm in need of a brew for the sake of a brew so I though it time for a TC.

I picked up four litres of Apple Juice in Tesco's on Friday night on offer, worked out about 50p per litre. I've got some Champagne yeast in the fridge from last year (should be okay  ) and some granulated and brewer's sugar in the cupboard.

Pics and method to follow (if I can remember how!). 8)

Looking for an OG of about 1.060 so I'm going to add 100g of glucose to the apple juice (Prince's Pure Apple Juice from concentrate, 104g sugar per litre). Also going to add a strong cup of tea (white, two sugars  ) but don't have any apple to hand.

Taking some pics as I go to up later.

OG came out at 1.050.

I can only assume I'd not factored in the water used to dissolve the glucose and the tea. #-o

Just starting to wind down now. Starting to clear and the bubbling has slowed right down.

Probably be ready to bottle on Tuesday or Wednesday I reckon.

Bottled it tonight and pitched four litres of Sun Grown Apple and Banana juice drink straight on top... but that's a different thread!

Image

Ingredients ready to go: juice, teabags, brewing sugar, sachet of Champagne yeast.

Image

100g Brewing sugar.

Image

Strong cup of tea, only two bags this time but I've upped it for the next one after reading about people's experiences on here.

Image

Four litres of Princes' Apple Juice in the DJ.

Image

Here's the lot ready to go, 1.050 OG.

Image

Eight days later it's down to 1.000.

Image

Here's everything sanitising ready to bottle.

Image

That's the tester, definitely down to 1.000 FG, 6.6% alcohol.

Image

A quick taster, strong as buggery and drinkable from the DJ.

tea is for tannin which is for body. think of a west country cider or a french red. i stick 1-2 bramleys in per gallon for acid and flavour.

Just trying my first bottle now.

Very nice, the tea definitely give more mouth-feel. Not too carbonated, might try a little more sugar on priming next time; just a little you understand.

Going down very easy, nice scrumpy feel to it.
