£1 Old Cider Kit

Post by urbantreemonkey » Mon May 25, 2009 4:00 pm

Hi guys went to a car boot sale on Sunday and a guy was selling some brewing stuff!
I bought a heater belt, brand new sample jar, brand new co2 bulb injector and 10 bulbs plus a old cider kit for £3.40.
Check this kit out! old school :) Going to give it a go only cost me a quid!

On the instructions it tells you to make it up with warm water add campden tablet sachet ( not with kit , but i have some not sure how many to use though) top up with cold to make 40pt then leave 24hrs then add yeast.
I was thinking that leaving it 24hrs would increase the risk of infection :(
It also mentions a flavouring sachet to add when its finished fermenting thats slso not with it.Like i said i'm going to give it a bash nothing to lose :D

if there's no signs of serious rust on the can then it'll probably be ok

I'd bin the yeast though, it'll probably be dead.

what's the best before date on the kit?

If you're still alive, let us know how it went/tasted

I would make it up to 4 gallons max, all of the cider kits I've brewed have been a bit wishy washy at 40 pints.

When you empty the can, a bit of rust on the ouside is not going to hurt you, but make sure that there is no rust inside the can... it will show up as black due to the action of the acid in the concentrate.

Chuck some Apple Juice into the fv when mixing it up and you may end up with something a bit more drinkable.
Planning - Not for a long while

Fermenting - I'm Done

Bottle Maturing - Hobgoblin, Fullers ESB, American Stout, TOP, Fullers London Porter, Bandini Black IPA

Drinking - Still...Whiskey

Well i made it up earlier,it looked okay inside the can, No date on the can though  It smelt of apple not off so i went and followed the instructions but made it to 20 litres.
Will put the yeast starter in tomorrow night ( have sealed up the f.v )
It said to use 1.5kg of sugar but i used 1 kg i thought 1.5 sounded alot, the o.g was 1054 with 1kg of white sugar.
Fingers crossed it turns out okay :)

Must say I'm very jealous.

I've been round every sodding boot fair I can get to with the hope that I will leave with shed loads of dirt cheap demi johns.

So far, I've found 1.

Bugger.

No date? Its at least 10 years old as its about a decade ago they started making them put dates on the tins. So long as the integrity of the can is ok itll be fine.

Down the other side of newton abbott theres a tip with a barn next to it where they sell off the "good" stuff that was taken there. I got a cheap keg, a king keg, 6 demijohns, and an FV for a grand total of £12. There are carbouys and allsorts there - you just need to be prepared to do some cleaning and buy some new washers if needed. The cheap keg I know is sound - havent tested the king Keg yet.
