Root Beer

Post by PieOPah » Wed Dec 20, 2006 2:38 pm

I love root beer.... I remember the first time I ever tried it and that was when McDonalds used to sell it. I guess that it isn't all that popular in the UK since it is quite difficult to get hold of :(

Anyway, I have wanted to make this stuff for a while - hell, I would love to make an alcoholic version.

Of all the recipes I have found they all want Root Beer extract. Now to me this isn't a recipe. Extract, sugar, water....

So, does anybody know any recipes? If extract is the only way to go, where would I get it?

Thanks :)

I think sassafras roots are the ingredient which gives it the distinctive flavour. I would love to get a hold of some.

sassafras used to be the flavouring but apparently it is carcinogenic so they use something else instead.

If the only way to make Root Beer was to use extract then I would love to know where I can get hold of it!!

Dentists mouth wash used to taste exactly like Root Beer. How anybody could like Root Beer with that in mind, is beyond me.

I've just spent 2 weeks in the States & I have to say, I didn't see a single Root Beer any where. So I guess it's not even popular over there any more.

I've been looking into this a while back but couldn't find a recipe I liked
wintergreen is what most of the american recipes use but there is so much contradiction in recipes

Have you had bundaberg POP? - highly recommended

And I don't know if anyone's still interested, but BYO had an article on making rootbeer in a past issue. I think it's about 6 issues back. If anyone's interested, I'll check when I get home. The article evaluates a few different extracts and then explains how to make it from scratch. A few recipes, too.

0.5 oz. sassafras bark
0.5 oz. sarsaparilla bark
1 oz. dried wintergreen leaves
0.5 oz. shredded licorice root
pinch sweet gale (optional)
0.5 cup spice tea (pinch wintergreen, sarsaparilla, licorice root)
corn sugar for priming

I would have no idea where to get these things from!

Seriously, is there any weirder group of ingredients they could have put together? I once read a list of "common" adjuncts used in 19th century porters--equally bizarre and not-tasty sounding.

I have seen sassafras/sarsaparilla in some good health food shops. Here are few I have seen, this is one site that sells it at around 3.50 dollars per 4oz
