TC advice please

Post by bovrilheid » Fri Feb 12, 2010 3:27 pm

I've invested the massive sum of £4.75 on my equipment and ingrdients for a go at TC.

using a plastic DJ, 5 litres of tescos cheapest apple juice and I will use some spare cider yeast I have. I am thinking about adding either some honey or sugar and like many a cup of stronf tea. I tend to like my cider dry and "appley" so will be priming with apple juice. I will bottle with crown caps (I'm not too sure about thi, but don't have screw top bottles and I'm doing thsi as an experiment as all my ale goes in kegs.

So my question is how will this turn out? should I be adding extra fermentables (honey etc.) apples etc. Ideally I would like a clear, dry, fizzy (but not too fizzy) fruity drink, what do you reckon I'll get from this? Not that bothered about have a strong cider somewhere around 5-7% would be OK

thanks as always

Chuck a jar of honey in or half a pound to a pound of cane sugar (eg Demerara) per gallon, advice is to not use white granulated as apparently it gives a worse hangover. Do a search for dreadskins recipe.

cheers, thanks for the reply. I added in some soft brown sugar (all I had) and some honey for the fun of it and had an OG of 1054, fizzing away merrily (at 20C) just now, 2 days after pitching the yeast, covered to keep the light out. What I did find at the back of the OHs store cupbaord was a jar or pure apple juice from a specific variety of apply called Katy. This was a nice cloudy apple juice, so it got chucked in as well as the cheap tesco stuff. Not telling her that I "borrowed it" So we'll see what happens now....got the kids driking coke so I can get the empty PET bottles....they think it is christmas just now :D
