Another cider thought? comments please

Post by Deebee » Tue Jun 08, 2010 12:51 pm

Lat year i was luckey enough for a guy at work to give me 7.5 litres of pure freshly gatherered sterile apple juice.

I made a TC last year and it was way too dry so, i thought i would wait a little before i did the next one.

I have gotten hold of a brewbuddy cider kit, basically a cider sirup a la the beer kits. I was thinking of using half the sirup mixed with the 7.5 litre juice, then adding some water to bring it up to 10 l. i would then naturally take an OG and go from there.

So the question is.. would this work and make a semi decent cider?

In my experience 1 can cider kits never don't really have much of an apple taste and taste a bit thin, I would use the full can and the AJ, top up to 5 gallons and check the sg then you can add sugar to reach the strength you want, I was thinking of doing the exact same thing with a black rock cider kit.

There are not too many cider drinkers in my circle of friends so i would not be wanting to make more than about 12 litres at a max.

Do you still think i should use the entire can, then the AJ, take an OG then either dilute with water or a combination of water and sugar. or would this make things too meaty?

If you only want 12 litres why not use the whole can and say four litres of AJ, top up to 12 litres with water and see what the sg is then decide about sugar, cider kits when made to the instructions are about 4% ABV so you won't be far off the mark by reducing the brew length to 12 litres and not using much if any sugar.

I think the AJ was extracted via a steam juicer and the guy used an amount of sugar.... get the impression that this will be about 7-9 % ... tally ho!
