Lambic Beer. Over priced & over rated?

Post by jason123 » Fri Jun 11, 2010 4:43 pm

Last night I had to stop by 'Beers of the World' in Kings Lynn as I happen to work only 10mins away. As well as picking up a s30 refill cylinder I took home a bottle of Cantillon 2006 Lambic.

Unfortunately I have to say it's not for me and won't be purchased again. I drank the whole bottle as it would be unforgiveable to pour booze down the sink. But, I found it too sharp and Oaky to be an easily enjoyable beer. Are they all like this or just an aquired taste. To me though, at £8 for the bottle I had last night, they'll be over priced and over rated.

How double dare you!!

Nope you are right, an aquired taste definetely, which I love
Also a lot cheaper in Belgium, but you do have to get there
Fermenter(s): Lambic, Wheat beer, Amrillo/Cascade Beer
Cornys: Hobgoblin clone, Four Shades Stout, Wheat Beer, Amarillo/Cascade Ale, Apple Wine, Cider, Damson Wine, Ginger Beer

To be fair you did jump in at the deep end of Lambics with Cantillon probably being the most uncompromising version. Personally I would have started with a Boon. Trad but not really hardcore.

I like Boon but find Cantillon just a little too musty for my tastes.

I've been getting a bit of a taste for Lambics and Geuze recently. It is an acquired taste, possibly best if you start with some fruit lambics to ease yourself in, Liefmanns Kriek Cuvee is outstanding.

Cantillon is one I have yet to have a go at, but I will as soon as I can.
