Hawthorn berry wine

Post by HighHops » Fri Sep 10, 2010 8:36 pm

I think I'm turning in to Randy Mosher. I've got an elderberry, a blackberry and a rosehip wine all bubbling away in the utility room and I've been eyeing up the sloes in the field across the street. I'm a wine newby, but this time of year seems perfect for making wine, so I was wondering what else I could make a brew out of.. old socks, fish fingers, belly-button fluff!! The possibilities seem endless.

So I bought 'First Steps in Winemaking' by the aptly named C.J.J. Berry (thanks to Big G, gti 1x and beerkiss for the recommendation). Anyway it turns out according to Mr Berry that you can make wine out of Hawthorn berries!!! I was told as a child that if I ate these then I would go to sleep for EVER!!! So I'm still weighing up the idea of fishfinger wine. :^o

Has anyone made Hawthorn berry wine and if so what does it taste like? If no one answers this post I'll assume that no one lived to tell the tale.

I've hurd of the flowers being used in wines and meads but never the berries,
but there again with a name like Mr. Berry and beerkiss's recommendation how could you go wrong

I really do hope you dont go to sleep forever, I really want to hear all about your Rosehip and Fishfinger wines!

Hi

Sad to say I've still got my original version of 'First Steps in Winemaking' from the early 80's.
Its a reliable book where I truly believe all the recipies are tried and tested, rather than made up to fill out a book.
The book sold by the boatload back then.

I did try quite a few odd recipies from the book like nettle wine (use gloves to pick them). etc.

I've eaten hawthorn berries before and they are starchy / slightly sweet, with no adverse effects.
see more info

Why not give it a go..

Apparently it's usually dry and tannic tasting. Yes they can be used but I understand that it's somewhat "unremarkable" and invariably is better blended with a fruit of strong colour/flavour........
