Yeast nutrient

Post by carlh5 » Fri Sep 17, 2010 6:58 pm

Hi all,

Was planning to try my hand at some winemaking this weekend for the first time in years.

Have everything bar yeast nutrient and no local supplier that I'm aware of ( live in Northampton).

How necessary is it?

Thanks
Carl

My understanding is that if you're making country wine you should add yeast nutrient (wines made from fruit may already have enough, but better safe than sorry).

If you're using grape juice you don't need it, as grape juice has all the nutrients the yeast needs....

Thanks for the advice Chris-x1 and Jim. Have decided to order some online and postpone the winemaking for a day or two

Vitamin B1 tablets from the chemist would do the job, and/or a small amount of marmite (not too much as it's high in salt as well, but has lots of B vit's in it)......

Hi, carlh5 just thought I'd let you know if you didn't already that there's a pretty good homebrew shop in Wellingboro on the high street across from Morrisons. Think it's called The Health Food Store it's a family business with health at front and homebrew at back I bet the guy in there(Dave I think) would be glad to help you out in any way he can. Much better than the stuff you get in Wilkinsons. Good selection of ale and wine kits and pure ingredients also barrels, buckets, tubes etc.... Well worth a visit at least once. I live in Corby and now use this store all the time for my homebrew needs and the mrs gets her herbs n pills there too so win win :0) haha!

Thanks Hawkmoon1704

I'll get over there and have a look.

In the end I ordered some nutrient online but it turned up the day after I'd made my Elderberry wine. I've added it in and hope that the yeast survived for the day without it. My first go at winemaking since I used to help my Mum some twenty odd years ago!

I'm using the CJJ Berry winemaking book/recipe and have my fingers crossed.

Cheers Carl
