Fermenting Orange Juice?

Post by faulknerm » Sun Sep 19, 2010 7:42 pm

After bottling my white table wine and Ribena dessert wine this weekend, I now have a couple of empty DJ's...and it seems a real shame to have them sitting empty when they could be producing lovely drinkables.

Unfortunately, I don't have any sugar, however I do have about 8 litres of orange juice in my brewday storecupboard (well, 4L of orange and 4L of orange and grapefruit) along with a litre each of WGJ and RGJ.

I was just wondering whether anybody had ever tried to make a drink out of just OJ? Kind of along the lines of a "turbo orange".

If not, any other suggestions? I also have about half a litre of Vimto cordial left over in the cupboard.

Cheers!

Yep tried it years ago in my early brewing campaign :D

It's horrible stuff but head cracking with Champagne yeast :D  #-o

OJ wine works OK however its really, really, really dry so needs lots of back sweetening. Once its been sweetened it comes out like a white table wine with a strong hint of orange juice, I've got a couple of gallons of it hidden away in my celler and can definatly say its worth a try.

Thanks for the feedback guys.

I've actually just bottled 5gal of WOW, so no immediate requirement for any more - I was just curious as to whether there were any more "creative" uses for the juice.

Guess It'll just sit in the cupboard until my WOW stocks drop and I'll get some more on the go. :)
