The traditional recipe looks quite straight forward. Most the ingredients should be easily found. For the Kome-koji have a look here

I did a bit of googling and got to the point where I though it'd be fun to have a go myself :D then read the stuff about it killing you :o and thought I'd give it a miss and stick with the wine and beer

You can buy sake over here (UK), but you need to go to a chinese super market. They will have chinese rice wine which I dont like much, and they will japanese sake. Note, it will be expensive. I drank it a lot in Japan when I was living there. Its best served warm (put in the microwave for 20 secs) on a very cold night. Note, it will taste a bit like straight vodka, but not as harsh and the best part of drinking it is the after taste. So sip it from a small glass. Dont drink it in shots!

For those who are interested sake is pronounced sar-keh

anyway i would steer away from that dragon sake the supermartkets sell now, its awful, and its made in the Netherlands

They used to sell the Japanese stuff, and it wasn't a bad one.

I enjoy a good sake, but there are loads that i would find too harsh and undrinkable, just like with wine. The best ones are served cold.

I dont know about death from a failed brew, but the toxin thing someone mentioned, all rice has spores, and if kept at the right temperature for long enough (around body temperature i think) they will produce toxins that will give you food poisoning, you don't have to try and make sake to get that.
