Help!! Turbo Cider keeps over flowing

Post by MariaLouise247 » Mon Oct 18, 2010 5:59 pm

Hi all,

Really new to this so please excuse my ignorance but i have a problem!!!

We started 2 Demijohns of turbo cider as a test run so i can do another before Christmas all ready and tested!! We have done one just pure apple juice and the other we added a little pinapple juice. The apple is near perfect (according to what i have seen on you tube!!) but the pineapple is out of control!!

To start we had a big froth at the top of what looked like soggy bread, this then overflowed last night and has done several times during the day.Why does it keep doing this? How do i stop it? What did i do wrong!!!?

Thanks

Maria Louise x

dont worry about it look at it as a lesson learned. youve not made a TC till youve had a air lock full of froth.
i always under fill the dj by about a litre then top up after a couple of days.

On the very positive side, pineapple will make a cracking TC. Might need a bit of time to mature to let the really sharp dryness mellow out a bit if you don't like the ultra dry taste. But, give it a few months and it'll be a luuuuurvly drink.

The reason for the spillage is due to everything going well, you certainly didn't do anything wrong.
The first 24-48 hrs of any fermentation is generally quite furious as the yeast feeds off the simple sugars and creates a lot of co2 which gives the foamy head (kraussen)

I've never had a TC spill out the top, but like beertrix I always leave it 1l shy and top up the next day/48hrs.

Beer on the other hand, I have had several find their way out of the fermentation bucket.
Beer - 20 litres FV 25 litres - 5 litres of foamy kraussen

Hehehehe
Not so much proud as lucky it was sat in the waterbath.
Its just a way to show some of the newer brewers that you dont have to panic if you create a lively ferment, and proof that good sanitation can cope with times like this.
(I also used it to show Ditch that you dont necesarrily have to 'thrash' your wort to get a good ferment I put this 1 down to the local breweries yeast nutrient I used ;) )

Geezah, I have had the odd one sneak over the top, but that one does look special considering the head space above the beer

Someone at work said to me today, 'no matter what your current project is, you always have to get all scientific about it and take it a step further'
He was refering to me growing herbs ;) (long time ago now) hacking game consoles, creating solar powered water pre-heaters to reduce heating bills, brewing wine & beer....etc

.... and you know what, he's right!

If something is worth doing, its worth understanding how and why it works, you can then manipulate that understanding and use it to your advantage.
From novice in june this year .... to ..... fook me mate, that was better than a bottle or pub pint in october aint bad going IM(bigheadded)HO :D

Trucker... if you want, pm me an address and i'll send you some of this yeast nutrient for you to test.... see if you get the same results as me.
