cider and light strike

Post by gti1x » Wed Nov 17, 2010 2:38 pm

I have several clear and green beer bottles that I don't use for beer to avoid it becoming lightstruck. I was going to use them for cider. Then I remembered that cider usually comes in brown bottles too (including the ones I use for beer #-o ).

So should I keep my cider in brown bottles, or can I safely use the clear and green bottles?

I'm not sure if it matters. I use clear PET bottles and store them under the stairs or in a black bin bag. They are never around for long anyway. I often see clear bottles in the supermarkets. Is it just natural light which is a problem?

i'm not so sure, if you leave an apple out in the sunlight it turns brown, it because of the natural tannins in apples. theres a higher level of tannings in cider apples, thats what gives cider apples their bitter tast. so i would say cider is affected by light strike.

your best solution is to use the bottles but just keep them in a cardboard box or somthing.

cheers

I think a lot of companies use clear glass because it shows off their product better, and they know that it probably won't be on the shelf for more than a couple of months.

Ultimately long term exposure to light will accelerate oxidation (what oxygen is present) and damage the colour of the cider but it's not such a big problem as with beer. If your cider is bottle conditioned the yeast should have removed all of the available oxygen anyways.

I have to say that this isn't going to last long either. SWMBO II (that's my daughter - before you get any other ideas  ) has discovered that she likes Kir citoyen (as I call it). That's Blackcurrant cordial mixed with cider. Lovely if you have a sweet tooth!
