Unconventional Oaking Technique

Post by Flumps » Thu Jan 27, 2011 1:35 pm

Hi All, me again...

I have a quick question I was hoping someone could help me with. I'm considering Oak ageing my next cider, but due to the total lack of home brew suppliers around my area, I can't get my hands easily on Oak Chips unless I go online, which for some reason I find myself reluctant to do..

I had heard that it was possible to get around this in a number of ways, and I'm sure I heard one method described where a chap took a white oak chair leg, Brand new so that it was clean, toasted it with a blowtorch to seal it, and then inserted that into his pressure barrel. Has anyone else heard of or done something similar to this, or indeed, do they have any alternative solutions? I'm aware it will probably end with me buying chips anyway, but if there's a more rough and ready solution I'd be very interested in trying it.

Cheers;
Callum

I've recently done a batch of TC with some oak chips that were from a wine kit. I have totally over oaked it and am now brewing a second batch to blend it with! Just thought I would warn you it's easy to over do it! :D
