Spotted this article yesturday while *cough* working; http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-13289383

the included link; http://news.bbc.co.uk/earth/hi/earth_ne ... 474777.stm shows some photographs but what is realy interesting is Defra's MAGIC website (http://magic.defra.gov.uk/) which maps out englands traditional Orcahrds.

After a bit of faffing around you can get the map to show just the Orchards (click interactive map).....

before the map loads....

Step 1. What data do you wish to view?

Select Habitat Invetories

Step 2. Where do you want to go?

Select England

Once the map has opened you will need to click on List Of Layers on the upper right side of the screen. A new window will pop-up, leave the top 5 options ticked but untick all the others. click refresh layers at the bottom of the check boxes, that will leave just the Orchards on display.

You will need to use the tools on the lower left and upper left to see the orchards, they are marked by redish borders. The best practice is to zoom into your are of interest and have a look around. clicking on the i at the top left will enable the information cursor, click on an orchard and its recorded information will be displayed.

I probably don't need to say this but if you find an orchard near you don't just go clambering around it, they are all owned by someone and you must seek permission first.
