Storing apples?

Post by Cazamodo » Tue Aug 09, 2011 1:49 pm

I have a chance to pick a load of Discovery apples that are ripe now, and the cox and russets which i want to mix arent ripe for another 5-6 weeks.

Shall I just wait for the russets? Or do I get some of these aswell? As I want to blend as many as I can together, how would I store these for that amount of time?

My dad keeps his in stackable plastic mesh crates, one layer of apples in each, though he also has a few cardboard lettuce boxes that he uses too. As I understand it, the key is to make sure none are badly bruised or rotting and then keep them cool, dry and with lots of air around them (hence not piling them all in one big crate); they keep for many months that way.

I was thinking, emptying out my fermentation chamber, its not got too many brews in atm, none that will do any harm moving out of it, and then lay the apples, layered by trays of cardboard inside and lowering the temp to 1-2*C. Hopefully they will keep for a while, I need to make the finishing touches on my press!
