Degassing Disaster?

Post by movnik894 » Thu Sep 08, 2011 7:16 am

Help! I am hoping someone can.
I bottled some ribena wine. One in glass bottle, One in plastic bottle. (I was short of bottles) The glass bottle had a plastic stopper and this popped out when it degassed.
The plastic bottle has a screw cap and i forgot about it. It has now swollen up and is ready to pop. One little unscrew and it will blow.
The only thing is, I am too chicken to try and unscrew it for fear of losing an eye, hand, or head.
Does anyone have any suggestions to try and reduce the pressure without the obvious please?
I do know i only have myself to blame and I should be keeping an eye.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Put the bottle in the sink, cover it with a towel, gently crack the lid (don't remove it all the way) and you should be able to degas it without issue or danger.
Mind you, I do think you are being far too chicken, its a plastic bottle, just hold it over the sink and crack the lid a tiny bit lol. :)

Put it in the fridge for a day or two, the drop in temperature will dissolve some of the gas back into the solution and make it not so explosive when you open it, then follow Wolfy's advice.

Thanks for your advice.
I was thinking about putting in the fridge.
I know I am chicken, but its only cause I had the same thing happen before but it was to one of those 5ltr water bottles I was brewing Orange wine.
It was massive and I unscrewed the lid a fraction and it shot off and scared me half to death!
Thanks again for you advice, I willl bung in fridge!
