cider pressure

Post by avtovaz » Fri Nov 11, 2011 11:12 pm

I have a barrel i got from wilkos with 22 ltrs of cider in it now, i added some sugar and i recon its brewing up some pressure for those loverly bubbles.

Question is, how much pressure do you need to make those bubbles?

I have seen the caps you can buy and the pressure cartridges, but its a dear doo.

So i was thinking, drill the barrel, fita 4mm air fitting, pipe that to a tap, then to C02 welding bottle with regulator to pressureise the barrel.

I think this would work the same, just after disconecting the cylidner, id have to leave the air pipe on with the tap.

Sounds like a recipe for disaster mate!

Budget barrels aren't designed to take that sort of pressure, tbh if you've primed your cider with enough sugar and the keg's sealed properly then you shouldn't have any problems getting a fizzy pint.

If you want super fizzy then I'd suggest either force carbonation in a corny key or if you're really on a tight budget then grab a dozen bottles of value fizzy water for 10p each, empty them down the sink and refill with primed cider.

Hope this helps,

what pressure? Im only wanting to know what pressure makes bubbles in the barrel...

Im quite awear that too much pressure is going to blow it to bits, but ti isnt going to go that far. It T pressure guage on the air pipe and let it up to what is said here.

the budget barrels can go upto 12psi or so ive been told, which isnt enough to gass it up.

Best thing ive found is to prime with sugar & put Co2 in when the level drops (air starts glugging)

The advice above is sound. If you want any sort of fizz in your cider, the best option is a corny keg or bottles.

A plastic barrel will not stand the pressure needed to keep enough CO2 in suspension, and the relief valves on these are designed to leak any excess at a fairly low pressure... for good reason.

right, i have never got a fiz out of the barrel yet, so that is why then! I thought the tap was a little too weady for what i wanted...

Ok, ill look for a proper keg, may even ask at the brewery next door to where i work!
