am i missing something when using it beyond pour a bit in, tip it over see where it stops??? as my home brew zinfandel reads at around 7... the shop bought 12.5% merlot reads around the same.... the chardonnay reads at 5.. not 12.5.
any ideas or am i being thick??

Re: vinometer...
You're not being thick. They're rubbish.
A hydrometer, test jar and something to get some of the liquid out the fermenter (I use a turkey baster, or you can use a "wine thief" etc).
As long as its all sanitised properly, you just take about 100mls with the baster into the tube, put it on a flat surface and drop the hydrometer in, let it settle and read the numbers off the scale.
A reading before yeast added a reading after the ferment has finished and the difference between the two can be converted to % ABV.
Easiest method and routinely used acros the wine world.......
