First TC
First TC
Hi, so I have started my first TC with 3x Litres of Morrisons cheapo apple juice and 1 x Morrisons cherry juice. I didn't add any more sugar, as just wanted a lower percentage. Is this OK? Should I have added more sugar?
I used some wilko's ale yeast and have another litre of apple juice to top up. I also added some strong tea.
I did this yesterday, but there isn't a lot of yeasty action as yet, d'ya reckon I just need to wait a bit or should I add some sugar now?

Re: First TC
With a straight juice fermentation, you'll be looking at 4.5 - 5% abv as well, so not over the top strength wise

Re: First TC
Done my first Turbo with bread yeast ...ended up calling it " dog bile "
so using a proper yeast definitely a good idea
It will happen!

Hello DL,
Welcome to the dark side. Seeing as it is your first brew, Put a blindfold on, get someone to tie your hands behind your back, and just let your brew do it`s thing! You can`t look at it ( I know you want to), and you can`t touch it for 2 weeks!

Re: First TC
One tip i'd give to all turbo makers that seems to be missing from a lot of threads; carton apple juice is very nutrient poor and I think this could explain the rash of slow starts to fermentation people are experiencing; for this reason, I'd strongly recommend people buy themselves a tub of yeast nutrient and use it as directed - thinking back into the dim and distant, Old Bloke and I both found that using nutrient saves about a week on fermentation in some cases !

Re: First TC
Yes, nutrient really helps.
And by the way - anybody who finds the simpler TC recipes a bit sharp...
I got some pH papers and a titration kit recently, and it turns out /some/ cheapo supermarket AJs are more acid than ideal for cider.
But I found Suma AJ concentrate diluted about 1:6 is bang on.
...and it won in my recent 6way taste test too. (Suma vs Prince's * 0.5l/gallon adjunct[cranberry vs cherry vs blueberry])
