Foraging blackberries, sloes etc in North East
I'm not sure if this is the right forum page but I am wondering if anyone knows any good places in Northumberland, Newcastle or County Durham to forage sloes, blackberries or any other fruit good for wine making etc. I have loads of elder bushes near where I work but can't find blackthorn anywhere!

I once collected rosehips from Plessey Woods.
Main problem in many places is exhaust fumes which taint anything growing near a busy road.

You can get sloes on the public footpath that runs past the NPL factory in Morpeth, loads of them but you have to risk life and limb crossing the A1 to get there

I've collected bags and bags of blackberries and elderberries from Holywell dene through to Seaton Sluice. Also had bagfuls of sloes from the around the outskirts of Ebchester.

Thanks for the advice, I'll check out the places you have suggested, I'm not 100% sure where the NPL factory is tbh.

A fair bit from Newcastle, but the Durham coastal footpath area at Horden was awash with blackberries & sloes last year.

Right next to the A1, factory you can see on the left hand side after the Morpeth turn and before the next junction with A697. You can get to it by heading into Morpeth and turning left down Whalton Road. Would have to look at the OS map to check how to get to the path as I only know it from being in the place but it will be on the map. It's the path that crosses the A1 and wraps around the site. Whalton road is the first major left turn after heading into Morpeth from the northbound A1. Will have a look and see if there is anywhere sensible to park around there when I'm back home later this week.m_rawdin wrote:Thanks for the advice, I'll check out the places you have suggested, I'm not 100% sure where the NPL factory is tbh.
