Press for apples?

Post by Martin the fish » Mon Dec 31, 2007 2:22 pm

I've been told a tonne of apples makes 150 gallons of cider.
Would an olive press be suitable to press the apples for juice?
A friend will give me a tonne of apples for half the cider if i can process and brew it
Another friend owns a boutique vineyard locally.
Can you see the connection? Especially if he'll give me two tonnes

I think it would be great to get the two together with me somewhere in the mix. Especially as you can't get half decent cider here commercially.
Worth a go isn't it?

I made a tiny wine press, which holds about a gallon before you start squashing the pre-mashed grapes. If you're in the tonnes plural league, you'll need some industrial-scale apple crushing before you can press the apples. Can you borrow something from your vineyard friend, or from a farmer for the afternoon?

Sounds sweet Martin

you many also need to rent/buy a garden shredder to pulp the apple before pressing.

Post us some pic's
