Hey folks,

Four great episodes from Johnny and Brad from the Craft Beer Channel on the importance of keeping cask alive. I'm going to get me a trad bitter on the go soon and serve from a polypin. I'm definitely guilty of turning my back on cask beer in favour of keg. Maybe you are too? Time to re- address... for me anyway. Enjoy!

Thanks for posting them! Those guys are entertaining and enthusiastic. But, they are portraying the commercial path. Converting that to home-brew is a nightmare to all but a select few.

Polypins are good, but do impose a shelf-life on the beer (they are not impervious to gases like oxygen). Not a problem if you stick to 20-25L batches and drink them fairly quickly (3-6 weeks?). I can brew 40 and 60L batches so not an option, but I have considered storing the bulk in "conditioning tanks" and transferring some to polypin when necessary (what a phaff though). "Breathers" (attached to cask/kegs) are okay but must be used with hand-pumps, might cause problems with Corny kegs, and for most home-brewers also impose a shelf-life (better than polypins shelf-life-wise, but they're expensive).

My preference is variable LPG regulators (with BSP thread ports) used with kegs/casks. Needs very little extra equipment if already "kegging"; uses the same equipment plus the regulators costing about £12-15. My document (linked in signature below) explains why (I don't miss chances to plug it!).

"Keep Cask Alive", but if that means "emulating" in a home environment, well, that's much better than putting up with only "keg" at home.

Yep, it is very difficult. My plan is to do a 10L BIAB and pin it. Few boys around of an evening and we'll take care of it in no time!
