Stink?

Post by soakins » Sun Nov 11, 2007 12:23 am

The best place I can keep a fermenting bucket is in my under-stairs cupboard, but that cupboard is very much in my front room.

Will my wife try to kill me? Will the living room smell like a pub carpet? Or will she forget it's even there?

I do the same Sam and any smell is barely noticable. If you open the door you will get a slight waft, but that's about it
A recently made Hefe also smelt a lot worst than most :!:

mine sits under the dining room table with no real whiffs , my hops store in the bedroom does create a few complaints though :D

SWMBO found the freezer draw I had converted to hop storage without asking, so I told her to ask next time

Smell should be fine. I've had problems with vigorous fermentation though. Haven't had the beer-fountains that others have had with airlocks as I use blow-off lids, but have had a massive krausen that oozed out of the top of the fermentation bucket and onto the floor when using liquid yeast. Luckily it was on floorboards rather than carpet but had to scrape up about a square foot of dried yeast goo with a spatula. No SWMBO, but housemate (and landlord) was none-too impressed.

Good to know that hefes smell more than normal. Have one on the go and it wiffed a bit. Was a bit worried that it was contaminated. Had a taste out of the primary and didn't taste too good, but hopefully will improve as secondary progresses.
