does anyone know where you can get fermentation vessels of less than 5 gallons ( say 1 gallon upwards) for doing mini-mashes eg for yeast propagation purposes. It would be brilliant if these could be open topped with the option of a lid and the ability to fit a fermentation lock.

If you're near a Dunelm Mill, you could get one of these

10 Litre Food Box And Lid

I've used this for 7 litre batches of TC with no problems

They also do a 6 litre version

You can always use a 5l water bottle for mini mashes, infact you could use any food grade container that you may or may not want to fit with a airlock. DaaB has used a rice container in the past.
