Brew Length

If a recipe states a brew length of 23L, is this the amount shat should end up in the FV or the amount you collect for boiling? Obviously you have to add another gallon in a 5 gallon brew to compensate for loss to condensation but what about the 3L you lose to the hops and trub? Do you compensate for that as well?

23L is what you should get in your FV. So you have to factor in evaporation during the boil and hop absorption.

I tend to top up with boiling water during the boil and factor in an extra gallon of length (give or take a few litres depending on how much hops i'm using).

I collect about 28L for a 23L brew which tends to account for both loss to evaporation and trub. I don't always hit it, depends on how the sparge goes. Recently I've only been ending up with 20l in the FV but I'm not too worried - I'd rather be a bit short than collect too much by over sparging.

So yes, the 23l brew length is what your aiming for on the FV

I'd be more concerned about the caking in the bottom of the FV
