Boiler keeps cutting out, should I boil longer?

Post by scarer » Tue May 06, 2008 6:10 pm

Hi

I'm currently making a Vienna Lager and as its quite warm today and my Burco's thermostat keeps cutting in and out so It boils for about 15-20 mins then cuts out for about 3 mins then starts boiling again.

This is something I am going to sort out obviously but for today will boiling for longer help, I normally boil for 90 mins.

The boil isnt particularly vigorous either :( It is an hour into the "boil" and the hot break has happened, should I just carry on for the remaining 30 mins or will boiling for yet another half hour (total 2 hours) be beneficial?

Good advice in the heat of the moment, but do sort it out later. However, I will say that some of the finest beers are merely simmered for a long period rather than boiled hard for a short period.

There's a big thread all about my tribulations over this, but to cut a long adventure short, unclip the probe and let it sit near the outside wall of the bottom of the boiler skirt. A bit of tape will keep it put and your cut-out temp will suddenly become about 3 on the dial.

That's great thanks, I'll have a go at that before my next brew.

It's only this warmer weather that's caused it, shouldn't complain really

When boiling I have the temp set so that it boils on & off for 90mins, ale turns out O.K.
In my eyes it saves lecky.
