mashing temp control

Just got myself an electric mash tun  :D
Looked at the advice on the site for mashing but am not clear as to whether you should keep heat turned on after adding grains or just lag the mash tun.

Not used mine for several years but from a hazy memory........

I suspended the grain in a grain bag to prevent hot spots and tried to find a happy setting on the thermostat.
Check the temp of the grain every 20mins to keep the mash in the desired temp range.
Check out the beers we have for sale @ Mix Brewery

I found the thermostat on my Bruheat boiler/mash tun unreliable. In the end I switched off after mashing in the grains and insulated with a towel and a coat over the top. I lose less than 1 degree on a 90 minute mash and always do it this way now.

i would use it to heat to strike temp then dump the grains in and lag the hell out of it.

seconded - trying to keep the thing switched on during the mash is a nightmare.

Thanks guys, this helps a lot. I've got an old duvet in the garage so i'll use that and keep a check on the temp.
