Batch sparging in 3 batches.

Now ive got less space in my mash tun due to a crack at the top and a small hole underneath to stop it spreading im even more limited on how much water i can add to it.

Ive been thinking about batch spargin in 3 batches, i know 2 batches is technically correct but is there any major draw backs to doing 3 batches. Is it less efficient?

For my 40L batches I always sparge 3 times, the only difference you'll notice is how much more of a hassle it is to heat up and sparge that third round :)

So so you mash as normal ie 2.5ltrs per kg of grain then divide what you then need into 3 equal batches?

Since the mash and first run-off will account for all the grain absorption, your 2nd and 3rd sparges will be a 1:1 ratio, What you add will be what you get out.
