ebc - ale malt

Post by towser » Thu Mar 26, 2009 6:22 pm

Sorry for the millions of Newbie questions

Being an expat, I don't have access to all the supplies that exist in the UK without paying mammoth shipping fees.

Ideally, I would like to order some Golden Promise Pale Malt to use in my TTL recipe from GW's book. It has an ebc of 4.5

I can only get this malt - http://www.brouwland.com/shop/product.a ... t=965&dt=7 It has an ebc of 7.

Hopefully, this will not impact the flavour of the beer too much but just affect the colour?

Do you think it will be ok or should I stump up for the carriage from the UK and get the proper stuff?

Why not use their "Pils 3 EBC" malt? It's slightly cheaper too!

More importantly have you noticed that they only supply whole - "Crushed malt is not supplied because of the great loss of aroma within a short time" - so if you don't have a malt mill you may have to order from elsewhere anyway.

Will that work and produce a good tasting TTL?
I'm getting a malt mill from them - so it is no issue.

Does EBC affect taste or just colour? I'm getting a bit worried now :?

If Golden Promise Pale is 4.5 EBC and I need 4620 grams for 25 litres of Timmy Talylors Landlord according to GW's recipe

Then could I mix 1732.5 grams of Brouwlands Pale Malt at 7 EBC with 2887.5 of Brouwlands Pils Malt at 3 EBC?

That would give 4620 grams of Malt, and if my sums are correct, a combined EBC of 4.5

Or am I thinking too much? :?

There's hardly any real difference with 4.5 and 7. Just use it and see what you think :D
