First AG on stuarday

Post by drmick » Wed Apr 01, 2009 12:51 pm

Hi All

finally taken delivery of my H&G 10 gallon brewery, got all the ingredients and this saturday is the big day - going to attempt London Pride from Wheeler's book. Since I got home last night and saw the big box and the sack of malt I've been grinning like an idiot :D . Will probably all go horribly wrong but until Saturday I think I am going to be rather jolly.

One quick question about light strike, do the kegs protect the beer from UV light? I know that brown bottles do just wondering if the white opaque plastic kegs do, I've got mine all lined up in the garage with various kits in them and until last week haven't thought about it but now we have this strange bright yellow thing in the sky I was wondering if I should cover them with a towel as the light does stream into the garage in the afternoons.

Thanks

DrMick

Do you have any pictures of the set-up?

As I am considering AG, do you need the sparging arm etc?

Don't have any pictures yet, will try and remember to take some on saturday when I use it.

Its the same as Horden Hillbilly's if you search for any post from him, he has a link in his website to him using it with lots of nice helpful pictures (there are two links can't remember which one it is). The set up is for batch sparging but I think H&G sell a sparge arm that can be fitted, but batch sparging seems much more simple to me, and anything that makes it easier is good for me

Hope that helps

cheers drmick,

I have no idea what the difference is between batch and arm sparging but I assume they produce the same consitency? I'll have a spy at the links!

Search for batch sparging and fly sparging on the forum. Horden Hillbilly's site also has a nice comparison of the 2 methods. Click this link http://uk-homebrew.tripod.com/id50.html I batch sparge which is dead easy. Apparently fly sparging can give higher efficiency but I get 80 - 85% which I am very happy with.

Regarding the light strike, do put a towel over the plastic kegs if the garage gets sunlight in it. It takes a while for light-strike to ruin your beer but it takes minutes to chuck anything you have over the kegs to prevent it. :)

I batch sparge. I recently filmed myself brewing. It may help you visualise the process.
