Sterilizing bottles

Post by dopejack » Wed May 06, 2009 9:04 am

Can I sterilize bottles by putting them in the dishwasher on the hottest setting (70C)? If so, should I leave out the detergent, maybe throw in a couple of Milton tablets?
Cheers

There are a few threads about using a dishwasher. Personally I can't see how the dishwasher will get inside the bottlers thoroughly enough.

I see many people on here trying to find easier ways to clean and sterilize 40 odd bottles but I have yet to see one that can beat the following method.

Clean your bottles as soon as you have emptied them, this can usually achieved by just rinsing them out with warm water and leaving them to drain. If there are some stubborn bits just leave it to soak overnight.

Get yourself some no rinse sanitiser and a bottle washer. There are plenty out there. See here viewtopic.php?f=23&t=12287. I recommend Iodophor, bloody good and killing all the nasties. Leave the bottles to drain for 10 minutes. Done.

The biggy is cleaning the bottles after you have finished with them, that way you only have to sterilise them when you come to re use them. I can sterilise 40+ bottles this way in about 15 - 30 minutes and haven't a bad bottle yet. :D

Thanks, that's helpful. Do I get iodophor from HBS?

You should be able to get it at most pharmacies as well...

I got f***ed off with filling rinseing etc....etc.. and after reading many posts on JBK Ive gone down the bottles in the oven routine and never looked back.

After drinking, wash and rinse thoroughly, store upside down.
When ready to sterilise I stick the bottles 30 at a time upright in my biggest roasting dish, bang in the oven at 80-100deg for 30mins or so, take out, let cool and fill.

Never had a bad bottle yet... apart from ones bought at the offy..
