Is my mashtun big enough?

Post by DC » Mon May 18, 2009 12:00 pm

Hi all, I am about to do my 1st AG brew this weekend and have decided to go with the Gob Hoblin from Barley Bottom http://www.barleybottom.com/menu/product/&ID=183. I have just one question regarding my 28 litre cool box mashtun. Will it have enough capacity to cope with this brew ? I would hate to order it and start doughing in to discover the mashtun is not big enough.

Cheers DC

Yes should be fine.

I have just done one - tastes lovely. 8)
My MT is 22litres and my grain bill was nearly 6Kgs. It was a tight fit but managed a 25 litre brew by batch sparging. Mashed with about 16.5 and two sparges of 12 litres and collected 31/32 litres of wort.
I need a bigger one

Dc if you go to the 'How much grain can i mash' post on this board, whorst has put a link to a calculator which will tell you your grain capacity.

It will easily be able to accomodate a 5G brew, I use a 28l Thermos with no problems whatsoever, even batch sparging and even brewing up beers as strong as 7% ABV.
