Saaz Hops in a recipe?

Post by Frisfur » Mon May 25, 2009 10:33 pm

Hi
The boss wants a lagerish recipe

I cannot get the lager temps for a real Pils or lager

What do you guys think about using Sazz with lager malt in an ale recipe to get as near as possible
Shall I use s-05?

Any tips would be greatly welcomed

Thanks

Chris.

What temps can you hit? Steam beer works well into the mid 60s f.
I'm just here for the beer.

I've brewed something similar to good effect as I also wanted a lager but dont have the temp. control.

I used Lager Malt, Hallertau and US-05. I've not used Saaz before but I guess it will give you the desired brew

Some good advice on a similar subject in this thread - see Chris x1's comment, I reckon the addition of some sugar to dry it out a bit is a good steer, it should help to give the crispness.

Or, if you are up for liquid yeast then a few of us brewed Kolsch last year and it was a favourite. Do a search in recipes.

If you're serving it chilled and fizzy then you can get away with pale malt and nottingham yeast...I know I have! I carb it up to lager style, run it though a flash chiller and it's a refreshing beer "in the style of" a lager. I've done them around 30 EBU which is about what Stella is I think and low on the aroma hops and the lager monsters quaff it without batting an eyelid.
Planning - Not for a long while

Fermenting - I'm Done

Bottle Maturing - Hobgoblin, Fullers ESB, American Stout, TOP, Fullers London Porter, Bandini Black IPA

Drinking - Still...Whiskey

Sounds just like what I need! May add a few sazz at the end to experiment, Cant have the lager lovers having it all their own way

I made a recipe with 3/4 pale malt, 1/4 lager malt, saaz and a wee bit of fuggles and it was great.

No fancy lager yeast. Just SafAle.

If you make a pale, hoppy beer which doesn't have obvious English hops in it like Fuggles, I don't think anyone would necessarily notice. Give a non-beer person a glass of Kölsch and they will say it's lager, despite the beer people knowing it's an ale. "Noble" hops like Saaz give decent lagers their defining aroma.
