CALCUTATING ALCOHOL FROM GRAIN

Post by trucker5774 » Fri Jun 12, 2009 9:39 am

How do I calculate the likely ABV for my finished brew. For example if using LME then each KG gives 300 points and DME gives 374 etc. Is there a calculation to establish what the grain bill will yield. Do the different grain give different amounts of sugars. I assume the efficiency of the system is also a factor, as will be the brew length after sparging, evaporation etc.

Go into Jymbo's recipe database off calculators/hints and tips and you can enter your recipe and it'll tell you. Lot of it depends on your efficiency - I got about 75% on my last brew.

I find the Beer Engine program helps a lot, free for personal use. Written for Windows but also runs just fine for me on Linux with Wine.
I brew therefore I ... I .... forget

I am with vacant - Beer Engine allows you to target an OG or build a grain bill and see your planned OG. I put in some previous recipes done to calculate my efficiency ( around 88% ) and have been bang on planned OGs since.

I love beer engine - it appeals to the geek and the beer monster in me. :=P
