Batch sparging volumes

As I understand it I want to collect 2 equal amounts of wort from my 2 batches. why is this? and will it matter if I change the volumes slightly so they fit in my tun, basically by reducing the first batch by a litre and increasing the second by the same?

I think it's just make life easy and the calculations simpler - it shouldn't make any difference whether you're a few litres up or down on one batch, or even if you split it into 3 batches instead....
