Stupid question flaked maize

Post by Deebee » Tue Aug 18, 2009 10:41 am

Looking at the pictures this look just like bulk standard cornflakes.

Is this indeed what it is?

I mean looking on a cornflakes packet there is an amount of fermentable in there?

I am looking at the London pride recipe in Normans forum.

It also mentions 1.5tsp brewers caramel, would this be added to the boil?

Thaks as always.

Cornflakes also contain the following:

Sugar
Malt flavoring
High fructose corn syrup
Salt
Iron
Niacinamide
Sodium ascorbate and ascorbic acid (vitamin C)
Pyridoxine hydrochloride (vitamin B6)
Riboflavin (vitamin B2)
Thiamin hydrochloride (vitamin B1)
Vitamin A palmitate
Folic acid
Vitamin B12
Vitamin D
Vitamin B

If you're OK putting that in your beer, go ahead. The flaked maize from the HB shop is just corn.

I think Fullers stopped using Flaked maize in their beers a few years back. They now appear to brew Chiswick, Pride and ESB to the same recipe and dilute to strength after the boil. I'm at work and haven't got my recipes here but the new recipes are something like:

95% Pale malt
4% Crystal malt
1% Chocolate malt (for colour)

The hops are probably the same as Norman's recipe. I'll have a look later and if no-one has posted a better recipe I'll post the one I've got.

Russell.

For Brewers Caramel you can use Gravy Browning. Use it in the same amounts and it'll produce the same results. If you don't believe me check out the Crosse & Blackwell stuff at your local supermarket, it mentions home brewed beers on the label :D

I've used gravy browning in a few brews, it was a while ago and recipes from Dave Lines book so may be he recommended it's use.
