Irish Moss - does it matter ?

Post by Chris R » Sat Sep 12, 2009 2:17 pm

Hello all....relatively new to the AG process and have just finished a mash/boil and realised (stupidly) that I had forgotton to add the Irish Moss at 15 min before boil end !!.. . Had completed the cooling step, but as I hadn't transferred to the FV yet, I re-boiled and add the Irish Moss, plus a few more gms of Aroma hop for extra measure.
Does anyone have any view on whether this will work or am I hoping against hope ?

Irish Moss helps the cold break. Which will improve the beers clarity, but doesn't affect aroma or flavour.

How long more did you boil, extra? You may end up with your beer being a wee bit more bitter.

Hi 196osh
Thanks for the reply - thought I'd try and keep the extra boil time down to a minimum so once rolling boil (again!) I added the IM and the extra aroma hop and left it for 15 mins before shutting down....I thought much the same thing about the bitterness, but hoped it wouldn't be too much as the overall hop schedule seemed pretty low anyway (planned EBU was 21).
