hob goblin clone!
I've just done a hob goblin clone close to orfys recipe, and after tasting a sample from the FV (gravity at 1016 still bubbling slightly) which is very close to the bottled version, i feel that the fruity aftertaste is not there. The questions are:
1. Can i add anything to the FV to get the correct fruity taste?
2. What would be the correct identification of the taste ie,orange, lemon or hops etc. I cant place my taste buds on it?
3. If nothing can be done now, is there anything i could do which would make the taste during the boil next time??? dry hopping???
Grab a goblin and please let me know your thoughts!

Re: hob goblin clone!
agreed, that beer is very fruity, I reckon that's why I also like it, the thing is though it could be the yeast or the fermentation temperature of the yeast that gives that flavour, I'm not sure what Wychwood or whoever brews it now use. Possibly an old Brakspear yeast?
You could maybe ferment it a degree or so hotter next time?

I he just started to ferment Ofry's hob goblin clone also. Had some issues as this is my second all grain brew; sugars mainly, so had to add almost 2kg of normal sugar and spray malt to up the OG - but we have to learn. Looking forward to it but mde some changes to the recipe. First I had to use cara instead of cara-pils as the homebrew shop had ran out, d had to use a different hop to fuggles. Dunno wht hop it is, got it off ebay but worked in the stout I made.
Can't wait to drink it.

data790, had to do that on my first AG about 300g sugar. Think its to do with efficiency. The hobgoblin though i ended up with more than the 23L (it was about 26L) which means that the tweaks i made in my set up made the efficiency higher. Keep at it and it gets better, If this goblin is anything to go by!!!!! Mrs caught me tasting the sample jar after the gravity reading....she thinks ive got a problem......

Re: hob goblin clone!
bazbaby, I was laughing at your comment on drinking the test jar as I was doing the same thing today. My God Ofy's recipe is very, very nice. Haven't had a hobgoblin in at least a year since moving to Norway. Tasted it, gave a bit to my missus and I was on cloud nine. When alcohol costs no less than £6 a pint you have to homebrew. Can't wait to get it into bottles and start drinking it. Never done an extract brew, only kits then all grain, so I am not sure how good extract comes out of this recipe. I can easily say I bought a lot of grains for any other brews I fancied, and will be brewing this again for xmas. Great ale. Oh, and I used dry hops in mine - as I said I had them lying about and had to use them up. I cannot get a hobgoblin over here no matter where I go so I have to rely on memory, but the ale is fantastic as it is.
Does anyone put their ales into oak barrels? If so where do you get them from?

Crikey, and I thought it was bad when venturing down south!data790| wrote:When alcohol costs no less than £6 a pint you have to homebrew.

Yeah lol, Norway is the most expensive place to drink. Cheapest bottle of wine is about £7 in the wine shops (as this is the only place you can buy wine and spirits, not in the supermarkets... not allowed). Beer comes in 300 ml bottles and costs £2-£3 for one, cans are more expensive. Alas, I know for a fact that ale, and British ales are too strong in flavour for the Norwegian pallet - as the hobgoblin would say "what's the matter lagar boy, affraid of tasting something" lol. Hoping to convert my missus friends and dad over to ales. Still trying to get them into cricket but this is an ongoing issue.

Re: hob goblin clone!
I was in Sweden recently. Found a nice bar with local microbrewery ales in the centre of Stockholm, a pint was around £9. The cheapest beer we found (in fact, the cheapest in the whole of Stockholm according to wiki) was about £3. It's funny how quickly people adapt, drinking slowly and going home relatively sober after a night out is actually possible
The Systembolaget shops had a surprisingly good selection of British ales but unfortunately we discovered them on the final day.

I've dispensed with the hydrometer and replaced it with me
