Over-priming pint bottles

Post by Scotty » Wed Sep 16, 2009 2:03 pm

I suppose it is my own fault as I haven't brewed, well primed a bottled beer for about 6 months.

I've gone and added a level 5ml measuring spoon-full of glucose instead of the half I should have added. All the bottles are crown capped too :bonk

What can I expect to happen? Should I store these at a lower temperature to delay secondary fermentation?

It shouldnt make much of a difference. The beer will be a bit livelier than normal.

Make sure that you chill well before opening. You could release the gas after a couple of days by cracking open the edge of the cap and then resealing

Thinking about it, coca-cola bottles are well carbonated so a little extra sugar shouldn't be a problem. And it'll just taste a little sweeter. Nevermind

I always do a level 5ml tsp of gran in each 500ml bottle. There is generally about 4 or 5 cm of headspace as a result of removing the Little Bottler tube, and the carbonation is on the low side for the styles I've been making, e.g. Hefeweizen and Märzen, recently.

I found that if I scrape the sugar level with the back of a table knife, I get a fairly consistent 4.6g - mind you I got bored after doing it about five times so this isn't statistically valid.

you never know, I might actually prefer my beer 'over-primed'. And if I don't, I'll drink and enjoy it anyway!

Don't prime with the amount of sugar you're told to use.

Prime with the amount of sugar that gives you the beer you like to drink.

Experiment a bit!

What's the worst that could happen? You might have to clean up a broken bottle. Big deal.

The worst that could happens is that you might have to remove shards of broken glass from your children and pets.

I always use plastic bottles and am able to prime at "huge " pressures. I vary it to the type of beer I make. 80g for ale and up to 150g for lager, cider etc based on 23L brews. If you are worried store the bottles in a container/bag/box etc to hold any mishaps.

Perhaps I should have mentioned that if you experiment and think you might break a bottle... well, put it somewhere safe, obviously. Like in a bin. Maybe even wear gloves and goggles. And open it over a sink. It's an easily contained hazard.

Don't put it in your kids' playroom or your dog kennel!!

Once you've got the priming the way you like it, you shouldn't break any bottles. If you do, you need stronger bottles.

RIP Chips the hampster; sadly missed since the Elderflower wine incident of 89!

I mixed up sugar, boiled in with some of the beer out the FV, chilled and stirred back into the FV before bottling.

70g of sugar in 150ml of beer which made 35 500ml ended up over-carbonated. Next time I'll only use 50g. There could always be the fact that maybe I hadnt got the full 23L in the FV. I do always bottle a plastic one and even though the sides could be squeezed the beer does froth out once opened.

Its more of an exact science to prime each bottle with spoon and funnel. I do worry about the issue of unsanitised sugar but dont think I've ever had an infection by priming this way.

I'm toying with the idea of using the same principle as mixing into the FV but instead using a syringe and adding 2.5ml of the solution rather than stirring back in. At least I'll know they've been evenly primed.

I used a syringe for ages then tried mixing into the FV/bottling bucket.....................same results but more hassle with a syringe!
