Second AG...Made a mistake...Help!

Post by nigebeer » Thu Sep 24, 2009 10:24 am

Hi All,

Last night I carried out my second AG brew, this was to be a "Timothy Taylor Landlord" from GW's great book, whilst draining the wort from the mash tun I thought it a bit strange that it was very dark, not how I remember the ones I have drunk in the past.

I then realised that I had used 300gms of patent black malt instead of just 30gms......Doh! :(

Its too late now to do anything I know, but can anyone comment on what it is likely to taste like when finished? will it still be drinkable? it certainly smells okay.

I will learn from my mistakes and double check in future.

Best Regards

Sorry to hear about your mistake. Don't worry, we have all made a cock up of some sort!

Regarding your brew, as you have gone to the trouble of an ag brew, you may as well see what it turns out like before you decide to keep it or not.

All is not lost. You can always do another batch with just pale malt and blend the two.

the black malt is meant to be only imparting colour not flavour (much) to this recipe, so it will still taste a *bit* different - but mostly just darker!

I'd drink it. 8)

It should be fine.....but you might want to let it mature a bit longer as that much black malt could lend a fairly harsh taste until it settles down a bit.

Who knows......mistakes are often where great new beers come from!

Thanks for all the comments, didn't think of blending with another all pale malt brew.....could be interesting.

The brew is fermenting like crazy at the moment, and smells okay so I am going to be optimistic regarding the outcome.

Many Thanks

Even if it's undrinkable at first, I'd never throw a beer unless it's off. My first extract brew was overwhelmingly hoppy as I forgot to top up my boiler and ended up with half the wort I'd hoped for. After a few months in the bottle it was great.
