Ok to splash from height from mash tun to boiler?
Ok to splash from height from mash tun to boiler?
is it Ok to splash from a height from mash tun to boiler? I know oxidising after fermenting should be avoided.
Re: Ok to splash from height from mash tun to boiler?
Hot side aeration (HSA) can be an issue for some breweries, and probably is covered in some of the academic literature, but in the grand scheme of things is really pretty minor. Worry far more about oxygen pick up AFTER the beer is fermented, that's where it is critical.
You could run a plastic pipe from the mash tun to the boiler if you're worried.

Re: Ok to splash from height from mash tun to boiler?
The Hot Side Aeration debate will probably go on for years, but I've done this and have not had what I would call bad beers as a result.
The double drop system that I've seen printed on bottled beers seems to suggest it will not be a problem.
Oxygen post fermentation is a problem.
Try both dropped from a height and not dropped from a height and see what You think!

I have just had a look, apartently HSA can cause Diacaytl flavours.
But thats all i could find on Scholar.
I would be interested in seeing if there was any scientific merit behind it. Rather than just speculation.

The dropping system is used during primary fermentation, not before the boil. It might have completely different effects (if any) to splashing before the boil.
There's an article about it here: http://zythophile.wordpress.com/2008/09 ... on-system/

Running a plastic tube from the mash tun to the boiler takes so little effort, I'd just do it. Whether HSA exisits or not, you're covered.

This is Ok, as is Mash to copper, after the Ferment is a no no.

I reckon as you can probably solve this potential problem very easily with a bit of plastic tube, you may as well do so.
As for "double-dropping", why not give it a try? Just rack into a second fermenter once the yeast is going full speed. Theoretically there is an increased risk of infection but it's probably not an issue if you're clean.
You can end up with a very clear beer, but I am not sure I detected much difference in flavour. Maybe someone who often does the same beer can do a test.
