3rd AG, first hitch

Post by beer today » Tue Oct 27, 2009 10:19 pm

I have just made what was going to be 23l of Hydes bitter from GW recipe, however when fly sparging I soon noticed the run off being too clear, and checking found the gravity to be less than 1006. I stopped and have put into the FV around half-10 litres , measuring 1050. I am convinced my grain bill was correct, tho I know electronic scales can be iffy, but the grain bowl seemed as full as I can remember to the last 2 brews.
The beer smells good, tasty and SO4 has been added and there is a good head. What could be my problem, assuming the grain ratio was correct ? If my mash temp had dropped, by how much would it have to drop, it seemed only to lose a degree over the 90 mins, but if my temp probe is at fault could it be that the mash temp had been too low ?
really hope this 10l will be ok, alot of work goes into these brew days, particularly with pestering wife and kids !

Did you adjust the gravity for temperature? Did you taste the wort that looked too clear? was it sweet? The mash temperature shouldn't effect the efficiency too much though it will effect the fermentability of the wort you should still get the same amount of sugars. I would have been tempted to heat the rest of the sparge water to 80c and effective do a batch sparge with the grain to see what happened. Is it possible that the crush wasn't right on the grain.

i haven't adjusted gravity for temp, I am unsure if the temp probe was at fault !
Maybe next time I'll tie a string onto a glass thermometer and use that in the mash tun. Everything seemed ok, still cant think of anything I've done wrong, the other 2 brews were fine.
Still it will make me more observant next time, and the good news is that I've got some great smelling ale fermenting under my nose, currently at 1018, so some way to go, but tastes good, maybe all is not lost.

Sounds to me that temperature adjustment could definitely be your problem. If you were measuring 1006 in sparge water at say 70C then that would factor back to something like 1016 at least I think, based on a hydrometer calibrated to read at 20C.
