malt smell

Post by 400d » Wed Oct 28, 2009 7:06 pm

my friends decided to do me a favour and transport 100 kg of pale ale malt in their private car from a malt factory because they are passing through the city where the factory is. now, they asked me if this malt would smell in the car (they are very sensitive to smells).

I really, don't know what to say because I don't know. Would 100kg of malt smell in the car?

I suppose it depends how well the sacks are sealed. There will be a slight smell I should think, but most people seem to like the smell of malt. It won't linger though. I'd be more worried about dust in the car than any malt smell.

Yeah, as already said, dust is a far more likely side effect. Malt bags are usually just tied up, so if they're dumped into a car they're likely to puff out a little cloud of dust. If they can be dropped into heavy duty rubble sacks or something like that, then tied up it should solve that problem and the smell (possible) issue.

Fermenting: nowt (sadly). Drinking: still a few bottles of my imperial stout knocking about . . . it's rather good now

If they made a car freshener to smell of malt I`d buy it.

Yes it will, but only a short time, I left only a 25kg bag in my car all day( in the heat of the day) and the next morning I had a great drive to work thinking, I cant wait to brew, but was gone that evening for the way home.

:D :D :D :D :D

Nice of them to do that for you, buy them a candle, light a match,

That's only 4 bags of malt. If the bags are the newer ones lined on the inside with clear plastic very little of the malt aroma will get out. If they are the older woven ones with no liner the aroma might be more noticeable, but nice.
