I agree with most here, we brewers know what goes into our brew & I for one don't add any "nastys" , not even any finings. I did read a report somewhere a while ago that having a pint of real ale a day is far more beneficial to your health than not having a pint a day. Lol & yes I do quote that to the wife on a regular basis !!

Cheers

Just like to interject on the behalf of simple sugars (these guys get a poor deal ), its a common misconception that sugars are the cause of diabetes (its obestity and genetics primarily). Diabetics have to regulate their sugar intake of course but thats a symptom of their condition and not in itself a causitive factor, there is no evidience that simple sugars cause it, anyway back to the thread
Fair enough, whoops. Trotting out misconceptions is something I try to avoid but i've been called on this one :D

Dear All

Many, many thanks for all your replies.
I have quite happily been brewing for some time and had never even thought about the subject before.
I follow a very simple rule of "keeping my equipment clean" and using fresh ingredients and it works. Plain and simple.
I'll have another word with my friend and point out all of the points raised by you guys and recon he'll be brewing very soon.

Brew day tomorrow!
Bass Draught I think.

There is one slight risk, but it's only for those who might find themselves in such an unfortunate position to be on immuno-suppressants. That risk relates to the unpasteurised nature of HB, but is a risk that extends to many other foodstuffs anyway.

Otherwise I can't see how there would be any increased health risks for the average joe by drinking HB. :D

I'm glad to see it's not just my imagination that I get fewer hangovers on homebrew compared to pub bought beer.

I also have an allotment and, from a health point of view, I see similarities between my two hobbies - I have more control over what I consume in terms of added chemicals. So, provided you carry out normal cleaning/sanitation in your brewing, I can't see how homebrew can be any worse than commercial beer.

Before we learned how to make clean tap water in past centuries, beer was the safer alternative. ;)
