extra long mash

Post by sam c » Sat Nov 14, 2009 2:07 pm

im doing two beers today, a pale ale and a mild. first one is in the boiler now and the second is mashing away. however the second (the mild) is probably gonna be in the mash tun for quite a while as i have to wait for the first brew (pale ale) boil to finish and the brew to cool before i can heat up the sparge liquor for the mild as i only have one boiler/HLT.

so the mild will probably be mashing for about for 2 maybe 3 hours. is this gonna be ok?

I am sure it will be OK. Some people mash overnight without any problems.

thats what i thought but best to check. do you think the sparge liquor would need to be hotter than usuall if the mash tun didnt hold the mash at 67 c for the full 3 hours.? if you see what i mean?

I did an Old Speckled Hen last week, got the grain temp to 66.7 degrees then left it overnight for 8.5 hours. By morning it was 61.1 degrees
don't start with a higher temp, just aim for 66/67

thats good to know. i was talking about the sparge liquor though not the mash liquor. it is already mashing at 67 c but i was thinking if the temp dropped further than usuall would the sparge liquor need to be hotter in order to be rinsing the grains at the correct temp. but if yours only droped that little overnight then mine should be fine after 3 hrs.

thanks

My last one was a 2 1/2 hour mash. I sparged hotter to bring it to the mid 70s. Brew seems fine.

ended up mashing for 3 hrs and it only dropped 2 c so i sparged as per usuall.

although i did have a little accedent when running off into the f.v and managed to loose 5 litres of beer! i was not a happy boy. especially as i started brewing at about half 9 thismorning and didn't finish untill about 8. i do have two beers to show for it though so in a few weeks it will all of been worth while :=P

cheers for your input chaps
