Two Brews in a day with my kit?

Post by WishboneBrewery » Fri Nov 20, 2009 1:52 pm

I've got the house to myself tomorrow... sooo!! Maybe!!!
Two Brews in a day with my kit for two 12Litre batches? If I had a HLT this would be much easier!

With the Following:
  • 38L stock pot boiler
  • 15L Mash Tun
  • Thermos Coolbox Mash Tun
  • Two 5 Gallon FVs and a few various other buckets...
Should I...
  • do two separate Mashes in the two sizes of Mash tun, meaning just one lot of Mash / Sparge liquor to prepare/heat.
  • Or stick to the 15L Mash Tun and >Mash>Sparge>Collect>Mash>sparge>Collect
I'm Kind of thinking the latter as I could be starting to heat up the first Brew while the second brew's Mash is still Batch sparging its second run off.

Am I going to get confused or what!!! :D

do two separate Mashes in the two sizes of Mash tun, meaning just one lot of Mash / Sparge liquor to prepare/heat.
This option by far, saves you the time of a mash essentially. Just collect the pre boil for them both and stick one in an FV. Boil and chill. Clean the boiler boil again.

Sounds fun.

I'm just not sure if I'll get a load of heat loss in the bigger tun with such a small amount of grain...???

Grains just prep'd :)

How much grain would it be? Also I once did a mini mash in a cool box.

The way I insulated it was to wrap a cushion in loads of clingfilm to add insulation and then put it at the top of the mash.

Worked a treat. But Is not exactly high tech.

Yeah, I could pop a bit of Camping mat on top of the mash, I've got a lump of Kingspan that I can put in my smaller tun... Its only about 2.6kg of grain. :)

What I'd like to do is brew two five gallon batches in the same day. Start with a wort at about 1.090 and dilute with half water in two fermenters.

It was half tempting to just do one big pale malt mash and split it. and add the steepables in the boiler.
