BeerSmith - Grain colours?

Post by leigh1919 » Tue Nov 24, 2009 8:24 pm

Hi-

have noticed that when I change the grain EBC on BeerSmith, the colour of the proposed beer does not change. Does anyone know how to effect this? It seems that only quantity of grain changes the colour, but surely the EBC differences in what is pre-loaded into BS and the grains I actually buy make a difference, too?

Or am I missing something?

Just tried it on mine, on a beer with 5% biscuit malt at 45EBC, I changed the EBC to 100 and the beer noticeably darkened. Not sure whats going wrong on yours.

Dumb question but are you actually changing the EBC in the 'color' box and not the name box ? :wall

Mysterio - not a dumb question at all - I've jiggled the ebc's a bit further and it does seem to be changing now - probably just my inexperience thinking that an ebc change of only a few numbers (say, 24 to 27) might make a marked difference.

thanks for clearing my head a little! Love using BeerSmith - really, i've learnt so much - but sometimes it still fuddles me!!

There's probably waaay more variation in the batches of malt (particularly the darker ones) so I wouldn't worry about being too exact. Sometimes the specified range for roasted malts is in the hundreds of EBCs. As with the IBUs, take the estimated colour with a pinch of salt
