First AG nightmare of an evening.

Post by BEN_SHADOW » Sat Dec 05, 2009 9:36 am

Hi all,

Last night I started off my first AG brew. I havent yet finished building my mash tun but managed to get the gravity I was aiming for! I didnt finish until 2am this morning. Had work at 8 this morning so got up early to rehydrate the yeast and make starter bottle. Turns out the yeast is dead. Packet of Garvins yeast that I have had for a while. Guess a while too long. Anyway, my question is this: How long can I keep the wort before adding live yeast? As I am working today and cannot get any.

Any help would be most appreciated.

Thanks

Keep it tightly covered to keep out any airborne bacteria.

Get some fresh yeast asap, the quicker the better. How long it's safe to leave it depends on how good your initial sterilisation of the equipment was, but you should be OK for 12 hours or so.

Get that yeast today (can't you send someone else for it?)!

Morning Jim,

Fermenter was sterilsed pretty well as I recall. Was a rather late one. You dont realise the amount of time required for AG until you try it out I guess. My fiance has kindly offered to get the train to the nearest homebrew shop to our house. We live in Felixstowe, she is getting the train to Colchester! ~Think maybe she wants a day out. Probably wont be able to pitch the yeast until about 6 or even after! I finished the boil lastnight at about 1:30. Little worried about this one.

Thanks for the fast reply!

pitch more than one sachet to give the yeast less lag time, as it will have been a few hours since the wort was ready, to be on the safe side. Remember to really aerate well before pitching give that yeast some oxygen.

Hey prolix,

Thanks for the advice. Ill sure as Jenny to pick up more than one sachet. Its so nice of her to get the train out to get them for me. Think ill take this as an early xmas gift hey. Has been such a stressful week with getting this brew on after so much planning. Had a lodger move in on the weekend so brew/music room is now bedroom. Brew day was going to be thursday but thermometer lost in change around, so bought new one after work yesterday and now this. Sorry if I sound a bit stressed. Dont like ths sat shifts.
